How to Extend the Lifespan of Your CNC Coolant Filter Paper
Coolant filter paper rolls are a major recurring cost for CNC machine shops. Implement these expert tips to reduce paper consumption and save money.

In high-volume CNC machining and grinding, coolant filter paper (gravity band filter rolls) is consumed continuously to keep the cutting fluid free of metal swarf. High paper consumption eats directly into shop profitability.
How can I increase the lifespan of my coolant filter rolls?
If your gravity filter is burning through paper rolls too quickly, implement these three operational changes:
1. Optimize the Float Switch Level: The paper should only index (move forward) when the liquid pool reaches the maximum safe height. A deep pool creates higher hydrostatic pressure, which forces fluid through the paper faster and actually helps build a thicker "filter cake" of metal chips. This cake acts as its own filter. If the float switch is set too low, the paper indexes prematurely, wasting clean paper.
2. Switch to a Higher GSM or Different Fiber: If the paper is tearing under the weight of the sludge, you are likely using a cheap, low GSM (weight) paper. Upgrading to a high wet-strength viscose/polyester blend from Filtech Fabrics prevents tearing and allows the paper to hold twice as much sludge before indexing.
3. Implement Magnetic Pre-Filtration: For ferrous metal grinding, install a magnetic separator upstream of the paper filter. The magnet will catch 80% of the heavy iron chips before they ever touch the paper, leaving the paper to act purely as a fine-polishing medium. This can extend roll life by 300%.
